Why WERS Ratings Matter in Commercial Window Selection

WERS Ratings: More Than Just Stars on a Sticker

You’ve probably seen them before. Those blue and orange star labels quietly stuck to window frames like nutritional panels for glass. They don’t shout. But they matter — especially in commercial buildings, where compliance isn’t optional and energy efficiency is suddenly everyone’s job.

Welcome to WERS — the Window Energy Rating Scheme — Australia’s national benchmark for window thermal performance.

But what does it actually mean?

So… What Is WERS, Really?

Think of WERS as your window’s report card. Developed by the Australian Glass and Window Association, it measures how well a window performs in two key areas:

  • Heating efficiency (how well it keeps warmth in)

  • Cooling efficiency (how well it keeps heat out)

Each system gets a star rating — from zero to ten — and behind those stars are real metrics: U-values and SHGCs. These aren’t optional extras. They’re what builders, certifiers, and developers need to sign off energy reports and meet NCC Section J.

Why It Matters for Commercial Projects

WERS isn’t just a spec sheet detail. It affects:

  • Your Section J compliance

  • Your Green Star or NABERS goals

  • Your ongoing energy bills

  • Your ability to occupy or certify a building on time

In short: windows that rate well under WERS don’t just perform better — they make everything else go smoother.
